Purple Club is a UK charity founded in 2006 specifically to address the appalling outcomes affecting the UK’s Looked after Children (children in the care of the state) and those who are on the edge of care.
Some of the frightening statistics that affect these unfortunate youngsters are:
- •78% of these children end up long term homeless.
- •75% long term unemployed.
- •60% end up within the criminal justice system.
- •Only 1% enters university.
- •Of the girls 21% will be pregnant before their sixteenth birthday.
- •Most convicted prostitutes come from a care background.
- •These children are 10 times more likely to suffer mental illness.
These statistics not only reflect the personal tragedies of these children but also the social tragedy that affects us all. If we could solve these problems we could empty half of our prisons and take 80% of the sellers of the “Big Issue” off our streets!
Purple Club works with local authorities, children’s services, schools, academies, teachers, mentors and other agencies to support these children and help them to become fulfilled, happy and useful members of our society.
